New Orleans Jazz is a term that has lost a lot of meaning to many people wanting to book a band. As an agency we are innundated with requests for a New Orleans Jazz band or a traditional jazz band or a dixieland jazz band. When we ask the clients what numbers they would like the New Orleans band to play they ask for requests for Frank Sinatra or Michael Buble! "Er, thats swing" we say. "Do you mean swing?" we ask.
New Orleans Jazz is a very old version of jazz music. Most experts agree that jazz was created in New Orleans from about 1910 onwards. This makes the bands playing it now recreators of history. The earliest bands playing New Orleans Jazz were mostly playing cross over music based on brass band hymn playing, turn of the century dance music from France, Spain and England and African songs. The music developed from New Orleans Jazz to Dixieland and then through to the revival bands of the late forties and fifties. In England the music was now known as "Traditional or Trad" We prefer the term "Vintage Jazz" to describe what our old style jazz band plays. We are talking about Dan Darling and his Lovely Chaps. This band specialises in old style New Orleans, Classic, Vintage, Traditional....call it what you will jazz.
